Hi there, I’m Órlagh and I’m an engineer of two decades plus experience (how did that happen??) in various industries across England and Ireland. I graduated from UCD in 2002 with a BE (mechanical), and picked up some other qualifications along the way. You can check out my LinkedIn profile here.

I’ve a passion for encouraging more women and girls to at least consider engineering as a career, as well as helping them stay in the profession once they start. And I know, it’s not always easy. I’ve written papers on the topic. And it’s a real problem for the profession.

Basically, we need more diversity. Now, I focus on getting more women into the profession, but we also need all sorts of other diversity as well. I’m not knocking that, at all. And I recognise that the path through the profession towards success is hard for anyone. It’s just that it’s a bit harder for those who don’t fit the “traditional” image of an engineer.

Now, I’ll throw in a picture of myself below, but seriously, I do not resemble Kevin from Coronation Street in any way. And I’ve tried to find the original study that stated school children in Britain could only name Kevin from Coronation Street, pictured above, as an engineer, but I can only find this LinkedIn article from 2017 and no citation given. I remember reading the damn thing but can I hell remember the title or author.

So this is me!
